Through light, rhythm, hormones, restoration, and the wisdom of honoring the body.</p><p>After 32 years as a registered nurse, and through my own sleep journey, I have come to believe this deeply:</p><h4><strong>Sleep is the foundation of health.</strong></h4><p>Not a luxury. Not laziness. Not something we should have to earn after everyone else is cared for. Not something we should be expected to sacrifice in the name of productivity, caregiving, or pushing through.</p><p>Sleep is where the body repairs. Where hormones communicate. Where mood stabilizes. Where the nervous system restores. Where the brain clears. Where energy is rebuilt. Where the body and mind have space to heal.</p><p>And yet, so many women, especially in midlife, are exhausted, wired, waking through the night, struggling with hot flashes or night sweats, feeling anxious about sleep, or wondering why what used to work no longer does.</p><p>I know this from my work. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">And I know this from my own life.</span></p><h4>Where My Own Sleep Story Began</h4><p>My relationship with sleep started when I was young. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">As a child, I was afraid of the dark and slept with the light on. For years, I thought my ability to sleep with light around me was almost a superpower. Now I know better. What felt like comfort at the time was also teaching my body something. Light is not neutral. Light is information. And the body is always listening. Years later, when I became a nurse and worked night shift, that relationship with light became even more complicated. Often, my first night on would turn into a </span><strong>23-hour day</strong><span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);"> </span></p><p>My kids would wake up around 9:30 in the morning, and they rarely napped. Then I would have to be at work by 6:45 that evening. I would work through the night under the most potent florescent lights, come home around 8:30 the next morning, and then try to sleep during the day. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">Most of the time, I could only sleep four or five hours. I tried so many things to force sleep.</span></p><p>I tried Ambien. I tried Benadryl. I tried Melatonin. At one point, I even slept in my closet because I was so desperate to create darkness and get rest.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.midlifesleeprn.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption"><em>Rhythm instead of constant optimization. Practical action instead of information overload.</em></p></div><form class="subscription-widget-subscribe"><input type="email" class="email-input" name="email" placeholder="Type your email&#8230;" tabindex="-1"><input type="submit" class="button primary" value="Subscribe"><div class="fake-input-wrapper"><div class="fake-input"></div><div class="fake-button"></div></div></form></div></div><p>In 2020, I knew cortisol was part of the problem. My body felt wired when it should have been winding down. So I discovered CBD oil, hoping it would help calm my system enough to sleep.</p><p>And it did help some. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">But looking back, I can see I was still searching for something outside of me to fix what I did not yet understand. I was always looking for the pill, the product, the supplement, or the one thing that would finally make sleep happen.</span></p><p>It was not until I began to understand the relationship between <strong>melatonin and cortisol</strong>, between light, darkness, stress, and circadian rhythm that sleep finally started to come in a deeper way.</p><p>Not just sedated sleep. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">Not just &#8220;I made it through the night&#8221; sleep. But deep, restorative sleep. The kind of sleep where the body feels like it can finally repair, reset, and restore.</span></p><p>What I did not understand then was how much light mattered. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">I did not understand circadian mismatch. I did not understand how deeply my internal clocks were being disrupted by working against the natural rhythm of light and dark.</span></p><p>Even after I stopped working night shift, I remained severely sleep deprived for years. I thought I was just a night owl. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">Yet I still struggled.</span></p><p>And like so many women, I thought the problem was me. I thought sleep was just supposed to happen. If it did not, I assumed the answer was to try harder, take something, push through, or hope the next night would be better.</p><p>But sleep is not something we force at bedtime.</p><h4>The Turning Point: Discovering Light</h4><p>That began to change when I discovered light.</p><p>In November of 2021, I started watching the sunrise routinely.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a sounds simple, but it changed the way I understood sleep.</h4></blockquote><p></p><p>I began to learn that morning light is not just beautiful, it is biological information. It helps anchor the circadian rhythm. It gives the body a signal that the day has begun. And when the body receives the right signals during the day, it is better prepared to restore at night.</p><p>Our bodies are designed to receive signals from nature, sunrise, daylight, sunset, and darkness. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">These signals help guide our internal clocks, our sleep-wake rhythm, our hormones, our energy, and our ability to restore at night.</span></p><p>And in modern life, many of those signals have been disrupted. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">We wake indoors. We spend our days under artificial light. We stare at bright screens after sunset. We eat, work, scroll, worry, and collapse into bed expecting the body to know it is time to sleep.</span></p><p>But the body is always listening. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">The body is responding to the signals we give it.</span></p><h4>What This Means for You</h4><p>Now, while so many of my fellow midlife women are struggling through perimenopause and sleep disruption, I sleep soundly most nights. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">And on the nights I do not sleep well, I usually understand why.</span></p><p>I can look at my light exposure, my stress, my evening rhythms, my environment, and the signals I gave my body that day. I no longer feel helpless around sleep. I have a foundation to return to.</p><p>That is what I want for other women.</p><p>Not perfection. Not fear. Not another quick fix.</p><p>A foundation.</p><p>A way to understand what is happening in the body and how to begin aligning the day so the night can restore.</p><p>That is why this space exists.</p><p><strong>The Sleep Nurse</strong> is a warm, science-informed space for midlife women who want to understand their sleep from the foundation up &#8212; through natural light, restorative rhythms, curated rituals, and circadian alignment.</p><p>Here, we will not chase sleep with shame. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">We will learn how to align with it.</span></p><p>We will explore morning light, sunset rituals, artificial light at night, sleep atmosphere, hormone-supportive rhythms, stress and tension, and the simple daily practices that help prepare the body for true rest.</p><p>My hope is that this space gives you clear education, practical rituals (so much better than routine), and a foundation you can return to when sleep feels confusing or out of reach.</p><p>We will honor the body instead of fighting it. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">We will return to rhythm. And we will begin with the belief that sleep is not separate from health.</span></p><h4><strong>Sleep is the foundation.</strong></h4><p>I used to think sleeping with the light on was my superpower. <span data-color="rgb(83, 76, 65)" style="color: rgb(83, 76, 65);">Now I understand that honoring light and darkness is part of how we restore the body.</span></p><p>If you are a midlife woman who is tired of being tired, I want you to know this:</p><p>You are not broken. Your body may simply be asking for different support. A different rhythm. A different relationship with rest. A different way of moving through your day so your nights can begin to restore.</p><p>That is the work we will explore here together.</p><p>Welcome to <strong>The Sleep Nurse</strong>.</p><p></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png" width="390" height="140" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:140,&quot;width&quot;:390,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:19625,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://thesleepnurse.substack.com/i/206946747?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F09fc5161-ae84-44e8-891b-0c99432d67e5_1344x256.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Rwod!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F11736d10-1795-42da-877f-60a0dcca07bd_390x140.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.midlifesleeprn.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe now&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://www.midlifesleeprn.com/subscribe?"><span>Subscribe now</span></a></p><p></p><h5 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Align your day.
